Depends what you want out of the game honestly.

If you just want a quiet place to netgain for tag protection, LaF is the largest alliance.
If you have no clue how to hug trees and want to learn, LaF has the mentors that have turned many players that were new to netgaining to top 10 finishes.
If you are a good netgainer that wants to improve, LaF has a large pool of players that you can interact with and get ideas on how to get better.
If you think you are one of the bests, LaF has the environment to challenge you, and if in fact you can top our current roster, I think most of LaF would appreciate that because that would shake the tree and maybe bring some people out of retirement for the challenge.
If you have no clue what you are doing and just want to play Mafia, LaF is also the place.

There are a number of other former TIE members in LAF. As a netting Alliance that is a good option and they usually perform set after set for good reason. MD is worth looking at as they have a good ability to retain members which is always a sign of an Alliance that is strong internally. If you are after something small and laid back I'd recommend Monsters.
