Auto manufacturers are starting to do everything possible to keep the consumer from working on their own vehicle. Soon enough you wont be able to open the hood. Mark my words.

That said, do you have a specific question?

Just trying to figure out how the new drain plug system works.
The tool looks like a special tipped screw driver, not the typical wrench or even a hex head socket.
The transmission drain plug looks similar but is a sort of siphon system attachment.

The only tool supplier with it is on back order and because they supply VW, OEM VW is also on back order with limited release of tool in "emergencies".

Just trying to figure out the reason for the dramatic change and how it works........what the benefits are etc

looks to me like you could use a flathead too. Not too sure what the tool does other than fit into the plug better, probably for retention once it is unscrewed. It is also probably better damage wise since the new drain plugs are plastic, like the oil pan.

the plug itself looks like it just screws in a turn or so and has a gasket. I dont really see a release mechanism that the special tool would activate, but then again i dont have a good pic.

Yeah it is a mickey mouse plastic drain fluff valve and if you lean on it very hard it goes POOF make a wish and disintegrates right before your eyes. So be gentle on it> Not a very good set up for a drain pan plug. SnapOn dealer has them on their trucks.

Made a thread on iATN ((site for car techs) and found out its not as bad as it seems.
Large flat screw driver or as one tech suggested, a quarter works.
Plastic pan > Plastic drain plug makes sense.
Lip of drain plug is protected by the pan.
VW suggests replacing drain plug occasionally to avoid problems.
VW tool is recommended but is not required although i don't know why yet.
German car techs are moving toward vacuum pulling oil out from up top and leaving drain plugs alone.
