depends on species and body of water!
I bass fish mostly, and use plastic creature baits with heavy (45+lb) braided line and a 1oz weight and then just cast(flip) 5-15 feet off the boat into the thickest weeds I can find. 7'6 heavy rod with no drag, nothing like setting a hook with that setup.
I also go trout fishing and I usually use 2 rods for that: On one I will use a shiner either floating 3ft under a bobber, or rig up the line with a weight so the shiner sinks to the bottom but has 18 inches of line to move around. Can't use smelt in MA, unfortunately :( The other i use Metal/brass lures mostly (Kastmasters are what I have most luck with)
Also I have never fished salt water, no desire to, really. Not sure
