I am new here and some have told me I need turrets more then others like army, planes and tanks.

What are the benefits of turrets over others?
The wiki does not seem to say much
If I should invest more in turrets then how many should I have?
I read in another post that you should have so many per a acre of land.

Turrets offer you defensive capacity against attackers who want your land... or from suiciders or those with bad intents or purposes they may have.

The best thing to do is to choose a strategy that fits what you want to be doing. If you plan to be at war or land-trade heavily, I'd suggest diversifying your military production, maybe 50/50 turrets/spies to protect yourself from attackers landgrabbing you, but also from those who would spy you to see what your defenses are and other nasty things.

If you plan to netgain, I'd say bare minimum... 3 million troops, 3 million jets, 6 million turrets, and about 500k-1 million tanks just for GP.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to invest in Military, Strategy, Warfare and Weapons technologies.

He just said he was new to the game.

You want turrets cause they provide the most defense for the cheapest cost.

No offense but what nightshade just said is useless. Cause you cant just say you want this many of each military units. Because it depends how much land you have. Eg nightshade what if he only has 4000 acres. How the hell is he going to afford that.

So get turrets as your main defense. Get some tanks but no where near as many. Get some troops but no where near as many. And only get jets if you are attacking. No point having jets if you not attacking anyone as it costs money to buy them and to keep them.

There are a fluff load of things that change how much military you want. But as a ballpark figure for netting i'd say 200 turrets for every acre you have. around 25-50 troops for every acre and around 10 tanks for every acre. Then increase if your still getting hit.

If your at war then you want like even troops and turrets.

Yep, military units have the following point system for attack and defense:

Troop: 1 attack 1 defense
Jets: 2 attack
Turrets: 2 defense
Tanks: 4 attack 4 defense

Now, keep in mind that I completely just made that up, but I think it's accurate? It's been awhile.

Turrets are cheap to maintain, and the most defense points for your money. Tanks and troops are kept more for abstract purposes, and if you don't plan on getting in trouble you shouldn't need any of either. Jets are used for attacking, and I'm assuming you're not to a point where you are land grabbing yet. Assuming you're not in an established clan I'd say carry about 200 turrets/acre and that should deter most grabs on you.

Tanks/Troops would actually be excellent for defense were it not for their higher consumption (I'm assuming this remains unchanged, as I've not heard anything about it - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) rate of resources.

Basically, you could go all tanks or troops, but you'd be spending about 1/2 again on upkeep as with turrets, which is what makes them the most feasible for defense.

Speaking from personal experience: Playing a casher strat off of about 10k-13k acres all-explore, because you're kind of intimidated at the idea of land-trading as some people will exploit what you're lacking defense wise to totally clean your ass out.

Any pointers?

A very enlightening thread, over all... :O)

And don't forget, jets are useless for defense...

Which implies he read the military wiki page which already has all that information. So that information was should have already been attained by him. Which is why i didnt mention it and took the approach that i took to his question.

Jets are mathematically useless for defense - but in practice, if I see a guy sitting on more jets than I have turrets, I'm not gonna grab him.

Can I train my spies to destroy turrets? :D

cause noobs have the slightest idea of what you are talking about.

don't worry about tanks, they'd only cause you to get in trouble.
I'd say run 50% turrets, 25% troops and 25% spies.

being new and alone, you're going to get hit by other people a lot so I would suggest finding a clan to join, not only will you learn what to do easier, but you'll stand a better chance of not getting grabbed so much you decide to quit
