http://mashable.com/...criptions-video-channels/

YouTube is set to launch a paid subscription model for its specialist video channels as early as this week, according to a report.

The move, which has been in development for months, aims to help channels finance a wider range of content such as television shows and films, and will serve as another source of revenue, according to the Financial Times.

The service will include up to 50 YouTube channels, and subscriptions to each channel will start as low a $1.99 per month, the newspaper reported Sunday, citing anonymous sources.

Interesting concept. I have several youtube channels that I subscribe to that I enjoy watching however I'm not sure I would be willing to pay for them. I'm not sure which channels are going to be a pay to watch thing.

It will be good for the content developers to get some more revenue. I have no idea what kind of revenue they take in right now based on the ads but this might motivate others to create better channels with better content that I might want to pay for.

no one is going to be able to build an audience with a paywall. As it is I don't know if there's anyone on youtube I'd be willing to pay to see.

Yeah at the present time I don't think there is either however with this new incentive more talented people might make some better channels?

From what I understand (and I didn't spend a lot of time reading about it) is that it is just for the content developers. Not for TV shows and stuff like that.

I would immediately pay to get rid of ads on the 15+ channels that I subscribe to and watch.

And to support the content producers of course.

@Cloaked and @Requiem The subscription option isn't for new channels trying to build their channel. It is for existing BIG channels with large fanbases/audiences, that just want to get rid of buffering ads and a way to contribute to their favourite channels.

In fact, new channels would suffer trying to produce subscription-only content.

At least, I hope the subscription is more for ad removal, than for content that only paying customers can view.

Yes it'll be a case of gathering as many followers / subs then switching to a paid channel. You will then see channels getting users to promote the channel to gain more paid subs. As they current model of social media growth for various videos that go viral wont work if its sitting behind a Paywall. How channels also launch new videos will probably find they have both ?

New content won't launch to the masses.

This.

I can't stand even 15 seconds of annoying ads. This is a huge benefit of Netflix -- no ads. So like everyone else is saying, if the content is high quality, like actual TV shows, then hell yeah i'd be willing to pay for it.

Argh, it looks like it isn't for existing channels, and it looks like the paid-channels are paid-channels content only.

And it looks like paid channels won't be available in many countries either.

Maybe at first but I guarantee you that if the money is there new people with better resources will make channels to get a subscription. I understand they are testing it out on a limited number of channels at first.

The point of watching ads is to support the Youtuber you are watching. When you adblock the ads on their videos, the very people making Youtube content for you to watch receive zero income and you are doing them a disservice.

Which brings about the point of paying to remove ads, and yet still supporting the Youtubers (by paying them).
