40lb thrust would work fine. More is always better when the wind picks up though ;)

you need to give more details. river? pond? reservoir? brackish inlets? intracoastal?

does your john boat have a gas propulsion motor, and you are looking for an electric trolling motor for fishing? or will this troller be your primary mode of transportation.

come on bro!

is that common, ford, where the primary means of transport is simply the troll motor? i'm guessing that would be for like swampish areas, not large inland lakes, for example, northern ontario?

right, so we throw even as little as a nine point nine onto the back to move across the open water, then shut it down, and troll motor for less noise and water disturbance, while still beating the current pushing you towards shore..

you dont really want to get into a large lake or pond with just a troll. nothing with a current or chop. thats just me though. you wont be able to change location rapidly, or get out of trouble. all you will be able to do is dump in at a ramp and hug the coastline.

And if your rivers are anything like the ones we have here in Oregon, don't do it either, the guys out here are running outboards and sometimes I see them struggle in the currents anyway, I've seen 10 footers with evinrudes get crushed onto the rocky banks :-(

i always find coast trolling to be both less fun and less rewarding/productive.. i very much enjoy the idea of a lure larger than my hand half a kilometer behind me a hundred and fifteen feet down, with my one finger on the line, and otherwise not paying a lick of attention.

but unlike most people who fish, i will happily fish for six some odd hours, catch absolutely nothing, and walk away having enjoyed myself more than i can ever remember while in a city of concrete and cement..

i can not wait to retire to the north of ontario.. can not wait..

115hp will also scare away any fish worth catching.. it might get you to the location faster than a nine nine, or even a twenty five merc or evanrude, but at a certain time don't we want stillness or quiet in the water?

i'm by no account an experienced fisherman, don't get me wrong, i ask because i welcome any sort of information to help me later..

I fish tournaments. Gotta get from one spot to another fast. I know 115 isn't that fast (boat goes 52) but I dont have time to waste put putting around...I'll be getting a 175hp in the next 1-3 years.

i dont really have a boat for the inter-coastal since mine is a 29 foot cruiser. ill admit i havnt used my boat in quite some time, but friends have taken her out. i like the open ocean fishing, but i would much rather dive than fish. or shoot fluff off shore. and no i dont have a trolling motor, a 7500lb displacement makes one kinda outta the question.

i was gonna say 115 is plenty more than enough.. but i cottage at relatively slow moving waters, fairly laid back fishing, wikipedia parry sound, if you please- my favourite place on earth. your basic nine point nine hp will get you from point a to point b in a relatively decent time, but even then the nine nine is too cumbersome for any sort of shallow water, so the troll comes in plenty useful in top or floating bait scenarios (even then if the water is still, paddle out to the middle and pretty much sit there if the wind is still)

half of my enjoyment in fishing is smoking cigarettes and pot and taking in the absolute quietness of the environment.. i live in toronto, so you put me where i can't hear a single car and i'm in heaven..

Lol, last summer we didn't get to mine our claim, so we helped my brother's buddy at his claim which is right down river next to ours, I was surprised how much gold and garnets there are here, I love the mtns too, when we couldn't mine I just picked up my prospecting gear, my dog and hit the creeks on the Cascades, good times man, best stress reliever!

Well I dont know about the motors part, but there are plenty around here that know about trolling, such names might include: mrford, dibs ludicrous, iscode, heston, home turf and quite a few others, i'm sure they will all be along shortly to show off their trolling knowledge.

did you actually make a profit off working your brothers friends claim, or was it more of a work now in hopes of later striking big deal?

dibs doesn't troll, per se, dibs makes valid and poignant points towards others vapid and useless comments or suggestions regarding topics which may be construed as political or sociological.. the man hides it well, mind you, but intelligence he somehow stumbles on..

His name is Babalou, ya don't ask lol, wife got that name, he's half golden retriever half husky, weighs 73 lbs I adore him, he's a great dog, very obedient and smart, none of my friends and family could believe it, 'how did you train him?" they say, I think I got very lucky with him.

No profit no, I just did it for fun and learning experience, he's been doing that for long time, his family has few claims in the area, I believe he had it since before him and my brother were deployed to Iraq, not sure.

Erm... erm.... my local fishing spots include the withlacoochee river and local private owned ponds a 30/40 lb thrust always work with a nice 10 hp outboard. If deep sea I think tend to use a 150/225 on a carolina skiff... and props to you for using a john boat, makes me proud buddy :) 16ft john boat here with 35 evinude and 40lb trolling, always include some oars!

For the river I usually use a 6hp merc.
