'As Britain clocked up its sixth consecutive day of plus-30C temperatures - with the thermometer peaking at 30.4C'

That's 86 degrees American to a peak of 86.72 degrees American.

1) they don't have AC anywhere
2) their roads melt when it gets that hot
3) their infrastructure can't handle it. People in towers can actually experience serious health issues:P
~~~
Here in Toronto the temps are at 35C+ (it was 90F in the non-AC parts of my appartment:P ). The response is open cooling stations for the elderly and extend pool hours until 11pm. WE ARE ORGANIZED!
I'll just be sure to laugh at some of you when you get 1/4 of 1 inch of snow and your city shuts down:)
I mean, we have heaters... it's all part of the same unit.
1) Why not? This ain't the dark ages, folks in the UK don't all live in huts and castles anymore do they?
2) Sounds like horrible planning/construction by engineers when it comes to the composition of the ashphalt/concrete..
3) They don't have the infrastructure for air conditioning? Do AC's just not exist, or do the majority of the homes in the UK not have a live power feed going into it for fans/AC?
Really, no matter what reasons you give, the rest of the world is going to giggle at the UK. Come on, man up, brits.
Lastly, sure, cities generally south of the mason dixon line will shut down at the sight of an inch of snow, but whoopy, people stay inside and drink and play games. Just beceause they're stuck at home doesn't mean 200+ people die a day.
Get yo fluff together, UK.
Their average weather probably doesn't warrant any air con to be needed over the whole year other than this week.
Over where I live, it's 30C everyday all year long on the equator, and there is no time at any point of the year that warrants installing a heater (temperature lows in the middle of the night are 24C). :P
Trife:
1) how many US houses have basements? or furnaces. Especially in Texas or the Deep south
2) yes. However back when they were built such temperatures were unheard of.
3) I wasn't talking about not being able to plug one in. I'm sure you could. I'm talking about not having any kind of proper response in place to heat in terms of an action plan.
Trife: it's more widespread than that. Try Oregon:P
A lot of people in the south have heat pumps that work for both heating and cooling year around.
I'm in the UK - and this weather is great :)
As martian points out, the biggest issue is our lack of infrastructure - we're a country that suffers from cloud, drizzle/rain and general miserable weather and a little bit of every type of wether. Extremes either side of this (excessive rain/sun/snow) brings us to a halt. We don't have the snowplow teams for the regular snowstorms as New York do, nor do we have all the awesome aircon like most US states have.
I was recently in Florida for two weeks, and it was 88F at the coolest, going up to 97F during the hottest day (but mostly 93-95). It was really because of the aircon and chilled water fountains all over the place.
So, yeah, it's not about being pansies, it's about having the necessary equipment. Let's see you guys do your 90F+ temperatures every day without aircon. :)
Did it for two years, here in the deep south, without AC... ya pansy.
I just got done working 2 weeks in a new office that the AC was broken. When I came in in the morning, it was already 82 or 83 degrees American. By the end of the day, it was 85 each day except for once I did see it hit 86 degrees American for an hour.
To be honest, I do have to say that for about 3 hours out of the 100 hours I worked in those two weeks, the AC did work and the temperature did get down to about 78 degrees American when the technician was able to temporarily fix it. Oh, and all but the last 20 hours of the job was done whilst wearing jeans. Holy sweaty pants batman.
I somehow survived! I have bigger cajones than the entirety of the UK.
This was a stupid person trying to make the British, who are not accustomed to high temperatures, baking in heat they aren't used to and don't generally have.
Trife, this was a petty, petty thread.
